Candles Vs Wax Melts

At Ember Stag I offer both candles and wax melts, both offer a home fragrance option but you may be wondering why you should choose one over the other.

So lets get into it!

All of my jar candles are made using a blend of coconut and soy wax with fragrances added and either a cotton or wooden wick. The wick in a candle uses both the wax and the fragrance as its fuel source, allowing it to continuously burn.

My wax melts are made using a blend of coconut and rapeseed wax, this is a much firmer wax allowing it to hold its shape better for melts and pillar candles.

Wax melts release fragrance when they are warmed and melted using a wax melt warmer; with either a tea light or electric as its heat source.

Scent throw

Wax melts have no wick, which means the fragrance isn’t being used as a fuel source. This results in wax melts often having a stronger scent throw when compared to candles, where the wick is using both the wax and fragrance oil to keep it burning.

Clean Up

Since candle wicks use both the wax and fragrance oil as a fuel source, you will find that as the candle burns, the wax also burns with it. This means that once a candle is fully burned,

you will only have a small amount of wax left over (which can be taken from the candle jar and used in a wax melter!) and so very little clean up! However wax melts are simply warmed to release the fragrance. Once the fragrance has gone, there will always be wax left in your melter which will need to be cleaned out before using a new melt.

Longevity

Wax melts typically last longer than candles. Since the wax is melted slowly over time and can be used again and again until the scent is gone, a pack of four wax melts can last up to 48 hours whereas a 190ml candle has a burn time of up to 40hours.

Cost

Due to their longer burn time, wax melts will cost you less than candles. With a candle, you are paying for not just the wax and fragrance but also the vessel, wick and decorative extras I add like the charm.

Ambiance

If you’re looking to create a certain mood or vibe than a candle is always going to win. Whether you choose a cosy cotton wick or crackling wood wick, there is something so comforting about the flickering flame of a burning candle. Pair that with your favourite reading spot and latest book and you’re onto a winner!

Decor

If you’re looking to decorate a space, create a specific mood or atmosphere then our candles will compliment any home. They can be added to bookshelves, bathrooms or kitchen spaces to finalise a space and ensure the cosiest, comfiest home to relax in.

Which do you prefer?

I use both wax melts and candles and honestly believe both are needed in every home! I often use wax melts while I’m cleaning or when I’m expecting visitors for a quick hit of intense fragrance. I often burn candles in the afternoon and evening to help me unwind and relax, they feel very much like an end of day ritual.

Let me know if you prefer candles or wax melts. Do you use both or favour one over the other?
